Power over sin

Knowledge is not power
repentance is power

I can know all the triggers inside me that predispose me to sin
yet the knowledge only makes me a miserable bystander
as I watch the passions storm through me, sevenfold worse than before

God help me to repent
forgive me

You are so right. Knowing is not enough.

In my faith there is a song that the little children sing: "I am a child of God." The song was originally written with a line saying "teach me all that I must know, to live with Him someday." The leaders of the church directed that this line should be changed to "teach me all that I must DO to live with him some day." At the time the song was changed they made very clear that we cannot EARN our way into the presence of God - it is through the holy grace of the Atonement that we can be made clean. And yet, they wanted to emphasize that just knowing right from wrong is not enough. We each must make choices of how we will submit our will to that of our creater.

Because I learned the song in my childhood in the original version now that I am in the position of teaching young ones at church I must make a very conscious effort to sing it correctly - the way we have been directed. It helps me to remember that what I DO does matter.
